1997 Mitsubishi Galant ES - Transmission Clunking Sound?
My daughter's 97 Mitsubishi Galant ES has a problem that results in a
clunking sound only when climbing a steep hill. It seems to occur when the
auto transmission drops down to a lower gear. A clunk or thud is heard.
Otherwiuse the car runs great.
Trying to figure out if it's a transmission problem, torque converter, rear
end, or universal joint problem.
The problem doesn't seem to happen if one climbs the hill slowly. That is,
if she stays in low gear all the way up. But if she drives normally and the
transmission downshifts, that is when the problem is apparent. It's like it
is dropping into the lower gear hard.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Too little oil in the transmission ?
check in neutral with the engine on tickover.

Thanks. My daughter told me she had checked the transmission fluid,
but I will double-check.
What do you mean by "...with the engine on tickover."
Thanks again.

Tickover means, with the engine running slowly, not racing , (under 1000
rpm).
By the way auto oil should be checked with a hot engine , ,,,,, A trip
around the block would suffice,,,

You have a projection problem.
Do you have any examples?
Will have a look?
