1996 maxima KS and TCC issues
Hi,
I have found the dreaded service engine light on my '96 Max. I checked the codes and they say that
I have a problem with the Knock sensor and the TCC. The dealer says to leave it alone as the car
runs great (with 162K km). The dealer has reset the light (turned it off) and so far so good.. My
question, has anyone done the TCC (trany problem) fix? The knock sensor the dealer says to leave it
alone as the Maximas are prone to this problem code coming up even when things are as they should
be.
Thanks.

Although the Max is prone to false KS errors, if it's original it's
almost certainly toast. It won't hurt anything and it won't turn on the
light by itself, but you will lose significant power as it's running
with the timing fully retarded. I'd replace it if it were my car. The
TCC I wouldn't worry about unless it comes back. The solenoid pack for
that isn't cheap (that's what it usually is in my experience).

Thanks for your input.
I'm thinking of still replacing the KS as soon as I find a reasonable price. The cheapest price I
found locally is $242 CDN, and its from the Nissan dealer! I think that I may find one cheaper if I
look hard enough. As far as the car is concerned, it runs great that way it is.

Is there any way to verify the Max is running with the timing retarded?
(My KS code kicked on with the CmPS code, cleared CEL).
