Sounds like an ignition problem under load. How old are the plugs,
wires, cap and rotor? You may just be do for a tune-up.

Re: 1995 mitsubishi mirage acceleration problem

I have the same problem, if I drive for more than an hour or so (dont want
to steal your thread). I drive my mirage (94) everyday to work, about an
hour ride and have no problems. However, occasionally I ride over to see my
grandparents, about 3 hours away. The car will make it there fine, its on
the way back it acts up. It does the same thing you describe under a load.
If I gently press the throttle just above idle it will run. When I try and
get it moving it will bog and hesitate really bad. This is only when I take
an extended trip with stop and go traffic and up and down hills. My ride to
work is all highway type of driving and the car runs fine for that ride. I
    have replaced the following:

spark plugs, spark plug wire and distributor cap/rotor. timing belt and oil
    seal, fuel filter.

With all of this I did notice when I first bought the car that the gas gauge
did not work. So I opened the top of the fuel tank and noticed the plunger
that measures the hieght of the gas in the tank was rusted. I gently sanded
it and sprayed wd40 on it to free it up. After that the guage started
working again. I was concerned that my gas tank might be filled with rust
and that is what I believe my problem was. This one is really wierd in my
    case anyway.

This message is for resojhe2, thank you for the information you posted
    about your mitsubishi.
The gas tank on my mitsubishi mirage had some debris in it. When i cleaned
it out the car worked fine.

    thank you resojhe2
