    1994 Q45 needs replacement Rack & Pinion

    Hello,

The Infinity dealer says I need a new Rack & Pinion since power
steering fluid is leaking due to the damaged Boots. Can I just simply
replace the Boots to stop the leaking and keep dirt out? Also, if I do
decide to replace the Rack & Pinion, what other parts are needed (e.g.
    Boots).

Also, I was told that I need a Wheel Alignment when I get the rack &
pinion replacement done. Is this true?

I noticed that delaer prices for a genuine Infinity Rack & Pinion is
about 4.5 to 8.6 times higher than if I where to get a remanufactured
one from the internet. What are the advantages/disadvantages of
getting a remanufactured part? Also, what does a "core" mean? Is it a
deposit that is returned when you mail in the bad part?

I am just a guy trying to save money on my car repairs.

    Thanks,

I want to add something to my original post. There is something called
the Rack & Pinion Kit. What does this kit include other than the rack
and pinion? Also, what is the labor cost to get a local mechanic to do
all of this? Is there a www site that will show the mechanics labor
    cost?

    Thanks,

the kit has the typical parts that need to replaced in the rack, like
    seals, gaskets, etc.

Are you sure its leaking from Rack and not a leak from the power steering
    hose or other source.
Sometimes the hose will leak and drip down on the rack and look like its
    the source or the leak.
If you have a jack, you may want to verify the source of the leak, prior
    to cost out the repair.

If leaking from rack, replace the old fluid and fill with new fluid and
add some stop leak additive. There are many types of stop leak stuff
available. Might be worth a try.

If rack need replacing, best to get a reman one and avoid dealer due to
cost. Check pricing at car steering.com I've heard they have good
    units.
Not sure on est. labor, may need to get some estimates.
