1993 Ford Taurus needs a new tranny.. suggestions?
Best deal I can find locally is $900 US installed, for a remanu'd tranny.
problem is, the car is basically a work car, and has had "work" on the
trans to shore it up so it doesnt get any worse.. but it's pretty bad
anyway.. when it downshifts from 3rd to 2nd it "slams" into gear.. had a
mechanic friend run a diag code reader on it, and it said "3rd gear ratio
mismatch".. is there anyone who's seen this, and knows a way to fix it
without having to rebuild the entire transmission? This car is barely
worth a thousand dollars US in it's current condition (side-swiped by an
uninsured drunk, and we only had liability insurance) but if I could find
a cheap fix to this problem, I could justify puttin a little cash into
fixin it up the rest of the way.. to sell.

While I do not know the tranny answer, fixing up a car to sell is like doing
the same to a house. You almost never get your investment back. For
selling a house, the rule is to clean, clean, paint, then clean and clean
some more. I suspect a car is the same. FWIW, $900 is not a bad deal for a
tranny, IMHO.

Normally I would agree with you, however, in this case, I'd be lucky to get
$750.00 for the car as is..
However, if it were in somewhat better condition, I could likely get as
much $3000
it is a 1993 Taurus LX with the 3.8L engine, 6way power driver's seat,
power windows, doors and mirrors, keyless entry, and is overall in pretty
good shape except for the slight damage to the driver side and this
transmission problem. I can't afford the notes on a new car, which is the
only way I'll be able to get anything CLOSE to what I feel it's worth at
this point.. as I said, I want to EITHER fix it up and sell, or fix it up
and keep.. if I can fix ALL the problems it has then I'll likely keep it,
if I can fix it up enough to run good for a couple days then I'll likely
unload it on someone.

Have you checked the local "auto recyclers"? They were junk yards when I
was young. Where I used to live, several had facilities to install salvaged
engines, trannys, etc. Just a thought.

Yea, there's only a few junkyards around here that even have Taurus' in
that model-year, and only one that I could find with the entire
transmission intact. and he wanted 500.00 for it.. and he doesnt have a
garage to install it.. I'd have to haul it somewhere and have them install
it..
Man.. I so wish I had another way of transportation... I'd put that sucker
on blocks in the backyard and start takin it apart, and rebuild the dang
thing myself.. but I dont really have time to devote to it right now..

Too Bad. I hope you get a solution soon.

The first thing you need to do is check the fluid. Check it when warm and in
park. The fluid on most Taurus transmissions will be slightly dark (nature
of the beast). If it smells burnt then $900 is a great deal. If it is dark
but doesn't smell burnt you have one of a few possible problems. Check the
fluid level. It should be at the Top of the crosshatch when engine is
running and warm. If it is not add fluid. Low fluid will starve the front
pump creating an air pocket which will give you the slip. This will happen
mostly on turns because the fluid on the AXODE trans sloshes back and forth.
Ford did come out with an updated filter and tube assembly.
One other problem could be a defective forward clutch piston. The original
piston was made of aluminum and tended to crack. The revised piston is made
of steel. If this is the concern the transmission would have to come apart.
Hope this helps.

$900 is a screaming deal. I hope you did not get quoted the "SUcker deal".
Its like what auto dealers do with the pile of rebates that no one can qualify
for
If your quoted $900 for only the kit and NO hard parts, hang on to your
wallet.
They almost always need some hard parts. Add a planetary gear or a LTC,
you up to 2 grand before you know it.
I would change your VSS, and change the fluid/filter and see what happens.
You might get lucky. Take it to a major shop that has a shafer shifter
and see if you can get a free diagnosis (IN the car) to confirm the problem
after you did what i suggested. AXODE is electronically shifted. They can hook
the machine up to it and shift it manually to check operations.

I look at cars like this: If the body looks halfway decent and it
doesn't rattle too much, I'd rather spend a few thousand dollars on a
*NEW* transmission and engine and still keep a big, comfy car, rather
than going out and spending the same amount for a new, tiny car with no
leg room.
That's my new thing. I'm probably going to replace the engine and
transmission once in my '98 Sable. Then once it goes bad again, I'll
get a new car.

The question is not how much you can get for the car. The question is how
much is the car worth to you? So what if it has been side-swiped? If keeping
the car is going to save you more than $900 in the long run, fix it. From
your description (slamming into gear), it does not sound like the will last
without the repairs.
BTW, I would sue the person who sideswiped you. Where I live, you can sue
for up to $2000 in small claims court. I would put a lean on his house, if
necessary. There is no excuse for drunk driving. You hurt something or
someone while drunk driving, you pay the price.
