Mercedes-Benz: 1990 300E problems

My neighbor has a 1990 300E with 350 000 km. Recently Within 1000 km of
each other, the two drive shafts broke in two. The mechanic never seen such
rust on the shaft. It seems that water got into the rubber boots and rusted
out the shaft.
He is wondering if there was ever a recall on them or if someone else had
the same problem.
