1987 Plymouth Voyager 3.0L - Tappets
Have a 1987 3.0L V6 Plymouth Voyager and I have recently been getting a lot
of noise from under the "rocker box cover" (not sure what you guys call
these things) this would indicate that it is probably tappet problems, ie,
need adjusting.
Is it possible to adjust the tappets on this type of vehicle? It's a long
time since a delved into anything like this and last time I adjusted tappets
...... didn't find it a problem but was using feeler gauges and a couple of
spanners. I guess this Plymouth must be more up-to-date ..... any
information would be gratefully received. The noise seems to be coming from
the back row of cylinders.
Thansk in advance

Re: 1987 Plymouth Voyager 3.0L - Tappets
The tappets that you refer to are hydraulic lash adjusters. They are not
adjustable. Just replaceable. And to note one thing. If you change one you have
to change them all. Or else the one that you changed will wear incorrectly for
some reason. Don't ash me why. I Had to do this two times. The first was done
the improper way and the second, replaced all. Aslo, make sure that your cam
shaft is not worn out of limits as well. A well worn cam shaft will cause the
same effect because the lash adjusters only adjust up to .1 inch.
Just some things to look for and hints from experience.

Can someone explain it to me?

Re: 1987 Plymouth Voyager 3.0L - Tappets
I felt sure the noise coming from underneath the "rocker box" was tappet
noise. However, I have had both boxes off, taken away the lifter system and
examined it ..... everything appears to be OK! I was wondering if the noise
that I hear could be anything else or whether I might be missing something
here.
It is a "tap-tap-tap" noise that increases with engine speed ..... it is
quite loud on idle and gets worse on speed up. Any ideas would be
gratefully received
Thanks in advance

on one of my friends car, even the timing belt tensior is faulty, he hears
similar sound. It might be the case for you also.

OK - so we can disregard the earlier statement as a myth.
