1985 325E Brake system diagnostic assistance required.
Hi All,
My 325E appears to be "burning" brake fluid.
What happens is that the brake fluid level slowly goes down but there is no
visible leak.
Occasionally the brake fluid has drained to the point where the pedal feels
"spongy" and
at that point the car releases large clouds of thick, white smoke.
My assumption is that there is a problem either in the master cylinder
or booster that is allowing the brake fluid to be pulled into the engine
through
the vacuum hose.
Does this assumption seem correct to you? If so which components are likely
to
need replacement?
Thanks in advance to all who reply

Add some diagnostic fluid (visible under black light)which is
appropriate for this application and then check for leaks.
When dealing with leaks never go on assumptions until you have
absolutely positively ruled out every other possibility.
It does seem odd that the engine is releasing white smoke, but why only
when the pedal feels spongy? You'd think that there would be more smoke
when the fluid is filled up and is going down, not when the pedal is low
and the fluid obviously at a low level.
