    1982 Maxima fuel problem

Car gets terrible mileage in town. After being run it smells of raw
gas and starts hard. Can not see any evidence of a fuel leak. Any
ideas as to what the problem might be?

hmmmm , here we go again gang.

    What could it be ??

    A rich running condition ?

What are the signs of an overly rich mixture condition besides poor gas
    mileage ?

Remember this is an old 810 series maxima with the L24 engine (in line 6
    cylinder)

    Bad O2 sensor(s)
    Bad fuel injector(s)
Overcooling engine (i.e., thermostat stuck open during cooler weather).

I'm not familar with the L24 engine... but here goes:

Signs of an overly rich mixture:

    1) Carbon fouled spark plugs (electrode and tip)
    2) Smell of raw fuel in the exhaust (possible black/grey smoke from exhaust?)
    3) Possible long-term side effect includes a plugged catalytic converter

    Possible causes:

    1) O2 sensors
    2) Bad Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
    3) As already suggested - stuck open thermostat - car always running "cool"...
    4) Leaky injectors

Nirav wins , Good answers man.( you wouldn't be looking for a technicians
    job would you ? ;- )) )

    Keep up the good work

The answer to this cars running conditions lies within Nirav's post.

He has their signs and their possible causes listed, one of them is the
answer, it is now up to the owner to do a little diagnosis and figure out
what may be causing it .

Actually the most likely problem is an air flow meter issue on one of those
    models.

don't know about the midwest but down south ( Florida, Georgia, Alabama) has
    a good concentration of Nissan/Infinity
dealerships, and they are always looking for good young/or not so young
technicians that can think about a customers concern and diagnose it
    properly
