# 1 Car Company Has Junk For Radios
If Toyota or this newsgroup fail to acknowledge junk reception and
sometimes sound on their 2002 model year radios who are they kidding.
Failure to repsond to this important consumer fraud is absurd yet you
respond to more stupid things and off subject and off Toyota subjects.
Your the loser when you own a Toyota and fail to tlak about Rav 4 and
I hear Highlander radio reception and overpriced radios in their for
sure 2002 model year. What has number one car company done about
it...NOTHING. Maybe small claims court can cure thier ill. Nick

Hey Mike, is that you again?
No problem, could not duplicate. And I own a 2003 Highlander. Maybe you
are confusing radio reception with XM sattelite radios? Ever occur it
was an outside interference or even the station distance?

Most of the base-model radios in all makes of modern cars are crap.
They are made in large quantities to a pre-determined bid price
target, and only need to keep working long enough for the car to get
past the warranty date while working, period.
If it's just an AM/FM radio, there is one circuit board with three
or four LSI chips that do everything, and a lot of empty space in that
big box. As long as they can build it for under $15, they don't care.
And the speakers are just as cheap.
Even the top of the line factory radios can't touch a really good
aftermarket unit like a Blaupunkt or Sony, and a good set of speakers
to drive. But you are going to pay dearly for the added reception and
sound quality, plus add a real antenna to get rid of that worthless
piece of wire embedded in the windshield.
Long gone are the days when a base factory AM radio sounded good,
was sensitive enough to pick up a mouse fart on a 5 Watt station two
states away, and worked for 25 years without a whimper.
I have one of those radios in my Corvair - a Delco hybrid
cold-cathode tube receiver with one transistor for the PA amp final,
anyone here want to rebuild it? Probably just a bunch of dried out
electrolytic capacitors again.

What are you talking about? The radio in my 99 Camry V6 is excellent. I have
no trouble, even during the day, listening to AM stations from a city 200
miles away.

Re: # 1 Car Company Has Junk For Radios
The stock radios in the 2002 Camry are made by Panasonic

Spell check is FREE and is included with your newsreader.
"THIER" it's t h e i r as in "the irs" makes it easy to remember.
anyway. someone builds the overpriced stereos to toyota's specs.
same with all car companies.
You can buy better for less in the aftermarket.

That's a 4 year old car, call me back after 10 years when the base
radio has died, or is suffering from obvious ailments like noisy pots,
one channel dead or intermittent, or the sensitivity has gone to pot.
Odds are, it will show it's age.
Yes, the premium systems from the car makers will probably hold up
halfway decently, but the base cheap radios are just that - base and
cheap. They make sound and let you hear the traffic reports. If they
do that much, most people ignore the crackle from the noisy pot and
just find a point where it works.

I am soley speaking for the year 2002 Model rav 4 and nothing rlse but
have heard Highlansders that year suffer reception problems too and
that came from dealership. Mine is stamped Toyota brand radio. Go
figure. Anyone know the specs like sensitivity. Lower numers are best
and for example a Blaupunkt Model MP-72 called Los Angeles the lowest
of all aftermarker and factoey at 6db. German engineering always did
build better radios. Ask a shortwave guy about Grundig for example.
Nevertheless Toyota had a excellent radio in my 1998 Rav 4 alos marked
Toyota. Different size and no cd player in that one but reception
superb. To posters who don't believe I wish they can hear mine. We
have 13000 watt station in town and I can't hear it sometimes 5 miles
away on fm 105. I still believe there was a run of bad units or combo
units possibly unknown to Toyota or accepted status quo by public
until now. They have chnaged the antenna placement and type and sure
as hell had to change the connections which may lie at fault then.
Could be why sometimes all right and other times not. They were all
changed new but if from the same batch/supplier schematics then hence
the same problem. Another point is I paid well over $800.00 sticker
price for an overpriced piece of junk. Aftermarkets are cheaper and
much better. SO I am asking Toyota since they won't fix or deal with
it. Take it and give the money back under warranty and I will buy my
own. They want to be number one let them prove it now. Also if you go
to www.rav4world you will see the posts other than mine by typing a
search under the 2002 model year for reception. I have scores of
personal emails from people who agree with me and now spoken for
having the same problem. When you live in a large city like New York,
Atlanta, Los Angeles and big buildings have antennas all over, it's
hard to judge someone in a semi rural mountain/valley enviroment
unless your here. And if comparsion is my judge then why do they come
in side by side on other makes and models and years and mine is almost
new. And even some with antenna mounted in same location. Something is
wrong and they refuse to spend time on it. If a wiring problem ,
imagine the cost Toyota will incur on a trace and labor intensive job
.. They don't care because it is not safety and no hand is forced. I
alwasy thrived on local tlak, sports news, weather alerts and without
the sensitive reception like I had previous what good is the
overpriced radio. Hope this helps explain more my feelings of a
becoming more prominent problem in this model year and make. Nick
