02 Echo Amazing Fuel Economy Story
For any potential Echo owners or would be purchasers...Toyota Echo
Fuel Economy is Astonishingly strong!!!
I'd just like to report that as long as I have been keeping a
meticulous economy log on my 02 echo sedan, (now broken in with about
38 000 k) the city economy has far exceeded the 42 mpg suggested
(Imperial gallon, in Canada). With the 5th gear I have been averaging
51-52 mpg (5.5 L/100km) in the city, up about 3 or 4 mpg from last
October in 2002 when this car had 17 000 km. Mind you this is only in
summer. Winter scores go down to 40 or 41 mpg or less in the arctic
cold.
Not surprisingly, this year I decided to take it on a family trip to
Jasper. On the climb (with wind resistance and luggage + wife and 2
kids) I saw the fuel economy only marginally up (53 mpg). We had to go
up some very steep and windy old mountain roads and traverse hair pin
turns at some old highway tourist treks.
However what came next is quite amazing.
On the way home, I and my wife took turns driving. I told my wife to
hold speeds at about 90-95 kilometers per hour- and NO FASTER after a
fresh fuel fill of regular low octane Esso fuel from the day before
(we were at a resort south of Jasper... about 55km away so started off
with roughly 110 km on the tripometer I set for fill ups (ODO trip
"A") after a brief stop in Jasper for coffee.
We had quite a few hills in the descent to Edmonton, and the wind was
behind us. After a "tank top up" in Stony Plain, the ODO meter "A"
read 443.3 km travelled on this tank. To my surprise I found it
required only 17.448 Liters of fuel for a complete fill. I usually
pull the nozzel trigger two full times until the pressure clicks it,
ensuring it's full.
After plugging this into my economy calculator, this turned out to be
an astonishing 71.72 mpg (3.9 L/100 km).
Conclusion: This car is amazingly economical, surpassing my own
expectations, largely due in part to it's lines based on the Prius,
and engine engineered for maximum economy. This has been my best
vehicle for economy by a long shot, though a litle noisy on the
highway (I use ear plugs).
Question:
Has anyone else ever recorded heightened economy scores on the Toyota
Echo like this or with other Toyotas? (E.g. 03 Corolla?)

17.448 liters comes to 3.83 Imperial gallons.
443.3 km = 275.4 miles. 71.9 Imperial Miles Per Gallon.
For us US drivers, thats 1.2 Imperial gallons to 1 US gallon ...
17.448 liter = 4.6 US gallons ... 59.86 US mpg. Whew! My suspicions
suggest you did not really fill the tank in spite of honest efforts
to do so. ;-)
The absolute best US mpg I have recorded on my '03 Corolla is 40.8.
I was not trying hard to get top fuel mileage (kept speed under 75
mph). This was on California's oxygenated gasoline which is known
for reducing MPG. Life is too short to get my panties in a knot over
fuel mileage. Get a moped if that's your life's big concern.

Excellent point. My wife gave me hell over my Tundra the first time I
put $50 into it (last time prices jumped)... she can't understand that
there's a difference between the 17 gallon tank that I had and the 26
gallon tank that I have. The Tundra mileage is not as good as the '94
with the 22RE, but even with current gas prices, I'm still looking at
fuel costs of under $0.12/mile, where the '94 would have been $0.09 or
$0.10.

Oh ... my ... God! Were you not getting an acceptable trade off
(and you are), I can see where your wife might remind you incessantly
that you are using nearly 25% more fuel! But let me tell you ... a
LOT of people are penny wise and pound foolish. I am talking about
the people who buy some super economy car for $22,000 bucks that gets
50 mpg just for bragging rights. Real financial economy would have
been to buy a $10,000 car, leaving you the balance to buy fuel and
oil for a number of years!. But in making a financially sensible
purchase, there would be no MPG bragging rights nor would there be a
social statement like "See, I'm setting an enlightened example for
the world to follow!".

for your l/km -> mpg calculations, are you using Imperial gallons, or
the smaller gallons used in the US?

In my last calculated loop from 8,000 miles to 12,800 miles I turned 49.17
mpg US gallon, with city driving.

Re: 02 Echo Amazing Fuel Economy Story
Why not? There are many larger heavy cars with V6 engines and
automatic trannys that can get over 30 and bigger 4cy engines in
cars bigger than the Echo, like the Corolla or Focus that can get
over 35. Why would a midget car with a midget engine not get 50?
They only problem is you place your life in your hands avery time
you drive in it, just to get 20 MPG more. Hardly worth it in my
opinion.

Thanks for the clarification, Philip! I was wondering HOW they were able to
achieve remarkable mileage, when the best we've gotten with the '01 Echo is
about 46 mpg.

So why is our 2000 Echo getting just under 30mpg?
