Just curious what year the Corolla's started mixing in the A/C with the
defrost setting? My older '90 Corolla doesn't activate the A/C when through
the selection switch itself - but if you manually turn on the A/C switch
then it'll come on in the defrost position.
I like this setup alot better as well.
One other quick question ... during late summer my A/C idle up on my 90 4AFE
Corolla for some reason stopped working .... the A/C works fine but doesn't
increase the engine rpm by 100rpms or so when the A/C is on at idle and the
compressor kicks in. I haven't looked to deep into it but was wondering if
the vacuum switching valve going to the adjustable pot on the intake may be
at fault or the voltage going to it? Would you know offhand what voltage I
should be getting going to this VSV mounted on the firewall? Was also
thinking maybe it's a fuse but not sure. Any advice you can pass along
would be great.
Thanks!

I had a 1990 Prizm which shared the heater-A/C controls with your
Corolla. My 2003 Corolla has two "nanny" features built into the
heater-A/C control.
(1) both defroster output selector positions will engage the A/C
compressor
(2) the intake air selector is automatically set to FRESH when either
defrost selection is made.
Not a big deal because 99% of the time I'm using FRESH and I rarely
drive on dirt roads.

Yes, the VSV on the firewall right next to the wiper motor area. Seen a
few of these lately with aging. To confirm it, take the 2 hoses off of
the VSV and butt them together and see if it idles up, if so, then with
AC on, check for 12 volts across the 2 pins of the connector.

Thanks for your advice ... looks like the mounted VSV on the firewall is
bad. I appreciate you answering my post.

Yeah, so far that's the only thing about my Corolla I really hate.
